Progress and planning; A Statement from Martyn Fowler
With the highly successful presentation night over and thanks given to two great Wanderers; Prop, outside half, hooker, Steffan Simpson and Club Captain, Committee man, Vice Chairman, and an undoubted recipient of a broader list of roles and titles at the club, Chairman Alyn Humphreys who retire and step down respectively. With the League make up announced we now look forward to the task in hand in Division 1 East Central outlining movements in the club for all who support Glamorgan Wanderers RFC.
With the exception of Jake Conway who is moving to London for employment reasons, we have retained all of our squad members, indeed several players have returned to bolster our ranks and our strength in depth. Jake we wish you the very best in London and the changing room door is always open for you, whenever you return.
Returning to strengthen the squad is Lee Highgate whose passion for his new coaching role is energising everyone involved. Great news for the club Daniel Richards is fully recovered post his shoulder woes and will add, genuine passion, steel and leadership to this group with his drive to push the club back into the championship with his hard edged style of play, welcome back Dan we are all very excited to have you back as part of our first team squad.
After missing much of last year due to injury Jacob La Roche is 90% fit, using the time away to great effect with great gains made in the gym. Josh Sheehan returns to commit to play in the back row, Josh’s lineout prowess and all-around dynamism with ball in hand will further strengthen our pack. Flying wing Phillip Pariyo re-joins from Bedwas RFC, joined by another flyer Tom Driver on the wing giving us real pace and power out wide. Powerhouse centre Josh Male, the very talented fullback Rhys Beynon and the impressive Dylan Lawley all join the Club, it’s worth keeping a keen eye on these three talented young men over the coming season. There are several other players hopefully returning to the club old and new faces in readiness for our pre-season starting at the Memorial ground 6.45 arrive.
A new club captain for a new season with Josef Russell taking the reins from Aaron Fowler who steps aside due his growing family, Aaron has been a great captain, leading with dignity, passion and intelligence. Highlight under his captaincy saw the squad gain promotion to the Championship and the East District Cup victory. Joe a Wanderer through and through, having been with the club through U8, is committed to return the club to the Championship and is already in training to ensure he is at the top of his game come September.
Pre-season games include; Old Reds RFC, (Bristol overnight stay), Sedgley Tigers RFC staying at Bredbury hall, Cardiff RFC ( night game).
